Former President Goodluck Jonathan emphasized the urgent need for state police to bolster Nigeria’s security infrastructure during a recent dialogue convened by the House of Representatives in Abuja.
He highlighted the inseparable link between state-level law enforcement and national security, stressing that decentralized policing is paramount.
Jonathan recalled the widespread support for state police during the 2014 conference and emphasized the imperative to prioritize operational efficiency in addition to establishment.
Beyond advocating for state police, Jonathan called for comprehensive measures to address systemic challenges and enhance the country’s overall governance.
He urged reforms within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to curtail the undue influence of law enforcement in electoral processes and emphasized the importance of robust legislation to prevent the misuse of state police for political gains or intimidation tactics.
