Niger State workers have initiated an indefinite strike following the failure of the state government to address their grievances.
The strike directive, issued by the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), came after the government allegedly stalled negotiations on critical issues affecting both workers’ welfare and state operations.
Idrees Lafene, the NLC state chairman, along with his counterpart from the Trade Union Congress, Ibrahim Gana, instructed civil servants to embark on the strike.
The NLC, in a letter to Governor Mohammed Bago signed by Lafene and Gana, expressed disappointment over the government’s inability to meet their demands. They reiterated their commitment to the strike starting at 8 am on Wednesday until their demands are addressed.
Efforts by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, to prevent such were unsuccessful. Although a meeting was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, it did not occur, prompting confirmation from a reliable source within the organised labour union that the strike would proceed as planned.
The source urged all branches to mobilize their members for full compliance.
Efforts to reach the Information Officer of the SSG, Tanko Lawal, for comments proved unsuccessful as his phone was unreachable.
