President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, along with other VIPs, will now be obligated to pay airport access tolls and parking fees across the nation’s airports.
This decision was reached during the latest Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Tinubu, where a memorandum from the Ministry of Aviation proposing the elimination of toll exemptions for VIPs and government officials using airports was approved.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Minister Festus Keyamo highlighted the revenue loss of over 82% due to non-payment of tolls by VIPs, emphasizing that even though the initial recommendation exempted the President and Vice President, President Tinubu insisted that they, alongside their aides, should pay tolls.
Expressing dismay over the evasion of fees by VIPs, Keyamo emphasized the importance of ensuring fairness in access to airport services, vowing to end instances where uniformed officers harass airport staff at gates by installing more surveillance cameras.
The new policy aims to generate approximately N10 billion annually from tolls, with considerations for rebates for military veterans being discussed.
