NANS Urges Electoral Reforms and Youth Engagement for Transparent Polls

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Federal Capital Territory chapter, underscores the imperative for electoral reforms to enhance transparency and credibility in future elections. Aina Oluwatomisin, the General Secretary of NANS, FCT Joint Campus Council, emphasized the need for reforming the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant bodies involved in the electoral process.

 

Speaking at a national multi-stakeholders forum in Abuja, Oluwatomisin advocated for the active involvement of students in electoral processes. He pointed out areas for improvement, including the Biometric Voter Accreditation System, procedural efficiency, and security measures during elections.

 

Highlighting the importance of law enforcement, Oluwatomisin stressed the necessity of implementing existing laws effectively. He called for comprehensive reforms within INEC and other relevant bodies to ensure more transparent and fair elections in Nigeria’s future.

Moreover, Oluwatomisin expressed concerns about the equitable distribution of government palliatives, noting that many students in the Federal Capital Territory have not received assistance despite their urgent needs.

 

Bukola Idowu, the Executive Director of Kimpact Development Initiative, echoed the call for electoral reforms, emphasizing the diverse perspectives on the 2023 general elections in Nigeria. Idowu emphasized the unanimous consensus on the necessity for reforms and youth engagement in the electoral process.

 

Key areas of focus include integrating technology, particularly electronic voting systems, to enhance transparency and efficiency. Addressing election security remains a critical aspect of the reform agenda to ensure free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
