NAFDAC Shuts Down 100 Shops in Enugu for Alleged Sale of Fake Alcoholic Beverages

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration, and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down approximately 100 shops in Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, for allegedly selling counterfeit alcoholic beverages. This significant raid, which took place on Monday, was a collaborative effort involving the Nigerian Police, Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Army.

Pharm. Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director for the South-East Zone, explained that the operation began on Friday and culminated in the closure of the shops. In addition to sealing these shops, NAFDAC also confiscated a truckload of adulterated products and arrested four traders suspected of distributing the fake beverages.

Iluyomade emphasized the agency’s commitment to protecting public health by removing substandard, fake, and adulterated products from the market. “These fake alcoholic beverages pose significant health risks to unsuspecting consumers,” he said. “We are determined to rid the market of these unwholesome products.”

The four arrested suspects are currently in custody and will be charged in court following the completion of NAFDAC’s ongoing investigation. Iluyomade assured that the agency would continue its efforts to safeguard the health of Nigerians by ensuring that only genuine and safe products are available in the market.

The raid’s success was largely due to the active collaboration with various Nigerian security agencies. The Nigerian Police Force, State Security Service, and the Nigerian Army provided crucial support during the operation, highlighting the importance of inter-agency cooperation in combating the sale of counterfeit goods.

NAFDAC’s mandate is to ensure the health and safety of the nation by regulating and controlling the production, importation, exportation, distribution, advertisement, sale, and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, and packaged water. This recent raid is part of a broader strategy to eliminate unwholesome products from the South-East region and across Nigeria.
