The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the request made by Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, to pause the trial regarding the N80.2bn fraud allegations against him.
Bello had appealed for a suspension of proceedings, citing an ongoing appeal by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the Court of Appeal related to a contempt application against the EFCC chairman, Ola Olukayode.
Justice Emeka Nwite, presiding over the case, rejected Bello’s application, emphasizing the necessity of his presence in court for due process. Nwite criticized Bello’s absence, stating that it undermines the court’s authority and integrity.
The court’s decision underscores the principle that failure to comply with court orders is unacceptable and disrespectful. Despite claims of concerns for his safety, Bello was urged to appear for arraignment, scheduled for June 13, 2024.
The legal battle continues as the court maintains its stance on upholding justice and due process.”
