Melinda French Gates made headlines by announcing her resignation from her co-chair position at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Her departure, effective June 7, 2024, follows the couple’s divorce announcement in 2021 after 27 years of marriage.
Mark Suzman, CEO and board member of the foundation, previously outlined the agreement that if either Bill or Melinda felt they couldn’t continue as co-chairs after two years, Melinda would step down and receive personal resources for her philanthropic endeavors, separate from the foundation’s endowment.
In her statement, Melinda expressed pride in the foundation’s work and her confidence in its capable leadership to continue its mission. She highlighted her focus on supporting women and families, revealing plans to utilize the additional $12.5 billion for this cause.
Bill Gates thanked Melinda for her contributions and reaffirmed his commitment to the foundation’s work. He expressed confidence in the organization’s continued impact under the leadership of Mark Suzman and the board of trustees.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, established in 2000, remains dedicated to improving global health and addressing inequality, guided by the belief in the equal value of every life.
