Mauritania President, Mohamed Ghazouani Elected as New AU Chairman

Mohamed Ghazouani, President of Mauritania, has been elected as the new chairman of the African Union (AU) for the year 2024. This decision was made during the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, held on Saturday.

Ghazouani succeeds President Azali Assoumani of the Union of Comoros, who held the position in 2023. His election marks a smooth transition of leadership within the AU, effectively defusing tensions over the one-year rotating chairmanship.

The succession, previously stalled due to disputes between member states such as Morocco and Algeria, underscores the internal divisions within the AU. Despite its aspirations for a stronger global voice, internal conflicts have hindered its collective security efforts.

One of the key topics addressed during the summit is the AU’s transition towards self-reliance in funding, reducing dependence on foreign donors. This shift comes in light of a UN Security Council resolution limiting funding for AU-led peace missions to 75% of the budget, emphasizing the need for African states to finance the majority of AU operations.

As the AU endeavors to strengthen its institutional capabilities and influence on the global stage, the election of Ghazouani signifies a pivotal moment in its leadership landscape, paving the way for enhanced collaboration and collective action among member states.
