In a tragic incident that has shaken the Nsukka community, Enugu State police have apprehended a 30-year-old man, Nweke Chukwuemeka, for the alleged brutal murder of a young girl, Zinachukwu Ugwu. The horrific event occurred on the night of August 18, 2024, around 10:30 p.m., at a residence on Orba Road, Nsukka.
Police officers from the Nsukka sector’s Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call about the shocking crime. Upon arrival, they found the lifeless body of the 4-year-old girl, who had been murdered in her sleep. She was promptly taken to a hospital, where she was declared dead, and her remains were moved to the mortuary for further investigation.
During the arrest, law enforcement officers discovered several incriminating items in the suspect’s possession, including a knife believed to be the murder weapon, suspected Indian hemp, and a charm.
According to preliminary reports, Chukwuemeka, originally from Umuagu-Ozalla in Nkanu West Local Government Area, had been residing in the same compound as the victim’s family. It was revealed that he attempted to attack other neighbors before breaking into the victim’s apartment. When he saw the young girl sleeping, he used the knife to slit her throat in a gruesome act.
The suspect confessed to the crime, citing that he was under the influence of a combination of illegal substances, including Indian hemp, methamphetamine (commonly referred to as “Mkpuru-mmiri”), and a locally known alcoholic drink called Action Bitters. He also admitted to being affiliated with the Vikings Confraternity and revealed his involvement in a 2022 cult-related murder in Jos, Plateau State.

Enugu State Police Commissioner, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has condemned this barbaric act and extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family. He assured the public that the police are committed to ensuring justice for the young victim and have instructed the State CID to expedite their investigation.
The Commissioner also emphasized the importance of vigilance within communities and urged residents to stay aware of their neighbors’ behavior to prevent such tragic incidents.
The suspect remains in custody, awaiting prosecution as the investigation continues.
