A coalition of 50 members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, under the banner of Concerned Federal Lawmakers for Peace and Security in the South East, has formally requested President Bola Tinubu to facilitate the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). They argue that Kanu’s release is essential for restoring peace and stability in the Southeast region.
In a detailed three-page letter dated June 19, 2024, the lawmakers called on President Tinubu to invoke his constitutional powers under Section 174 of the Nigerian Constitution (1999, as amended) and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (2015). These sections empower the Attorney-General of the Federation to discontinue any criminal proceedings in the public interest.
The legislators, representing various political parties and regions, have also urged President Tinubu to initiate a comprehensive presidential peace initiative aimed at addressing the multifaceted challenges in the Southeast. The signatories to the letter include prominent figures such as Hon Obi Aguocha (Abia), Hon Ikenga Ugochinyere (Imo), and Hon Aliyu Mustapha (Kaduna), among others.

Highlighting the deteriorating security and economic conditions in the Southeast, the lawmakers emphasized that releasing Kanu could serve as a pivotal step towards national unity and reconciliation. They pointed out that the region has been grappling with severe security breakdowns, economic downturns, and displacement of families and businesses.
The lawmakers drew parallels to previous actions taken by the government, such as the discontinuation of charges against Omoyele Sowore and Sunday Igboho, which they cited as successful interventions that helped mitigate regional conflicts. They believe that a similar approach towards Kanu’s case could foster dialogue, reduce violence, and promote economic growth in the Southeast.
Emphasizing the importance of dialogue over prolonged judicial proceedings, the lawmakers expressed confidence that President Tinubu’s intervention could transform the Southeast by promoting inclusivity and addressing longstanding grievances. They argued that this move would not only uphold the principles of justice and fairness but also enhance President Tinubu’s legacy as a leader committed to national unity and progress.
