The Labour Party (LP) in Abia State has distanced itself from the committee recently formed by the Julius Abure faction to oversee the forthcoming local government elections scheduled for November 2, 2024. The faction had appointed a former state chairman, Hon. Ceekay Igara, to lead the screening committee, with the current state secretary, Rev. Andrew Ohiagba, as a member.
Hon. Ceekay Igara had called on party members across Abia’s three senatorial zones to obtain their nomination and expression of interest forms from zonal party offices. However, the current Abia State chairman of the Labour Party, Emmanuel Oti, disclaimed the legitimacy of the committee formed by the Abure group. He warned the public against engaging with any individuals outside of his recognized leadership.

In a statement, Oti clarified that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) no longer recognizes Julius Abure as the national chairman of the Labour Party due to the expiration of his tenure and that of his executive team. He further explained that the party has established a national caretaker committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, which is now responsible for overseeing all party activities, including the conduct of primaries for the upcoming local government elections.
“The attention of the Labour Party, Abia State Chapter, has been drawn to a recent radio broadcast by Mr. Ceekay Igara, the former state chairman, instructing the public on where to acquire nomination forms for the party’s primaries ahead of the upcoming local government elections,” said Oti. “The public should disregard these unauthorized announcements as Mr. Igara and his colleagues have completed their tenure, leading INEC to cease recognizing them
