The Labour Party (LP), under the leadership of Julius Abure, has pointed fingers at its own presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Barr. Olumide Akpata, for the party’s poor performance in the recently concluded Edo State governorship election.
In a statement released by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, the party extended its congratulations to Edo State’s Governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the victory as well-deserved. They also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting what they regarded as one of the most transparent and peaceful elections in Nigeria.
However, the party expressed disappointment in the actions of Peter Obi and Alex Otti, accusing them of undermining the National Working Committee (NWC). According to Arabambi, their alleged high-handedness, deceit, and power-hungry actions significantly contributed to the party’s loss.

He further criticized Akpata for his approach, claiming that his candidacy was ill-received by Edo voters as he hails from the same local government area as the outgoing governor, Godwin Obaseki. Arabambi explained that the people of Edo desired a governor from Edo Central, leading to APC and PDP fielding candidates from that region.
The Labour Party also dismissed Akpata’s allegations that the election was influenced by vote-buying, pointing out that Akpata himself bought delegates during the party’s primaries to secure the ticket. They urged the people of Edo to support the newly elected governor and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the party’s constitution under Abure’s leadership.
