The organised labour has announced a nationwide indefinite strike commencing Monday in response to the Federal Government’s refusal to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.
Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), declared the strike during a press conference at Labour House, Abuja.
The strike, scheduled to commence midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024, follows stalled negotiations earlier on Friday, where the government remained steadfast on its N60,000 proposal.
Despite an extended deadline set by the NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for May 31, 2024, talks hit an impasse when both parties failed to find common ground.
During Tuesday’s negotiations, the government marginally increased its offer by an additional N3,000, bringing the total to N60,000, which was rebuffed by labour representatives.
In response, labour adjusted its demand downwards, reducing it by N3,000 from the previous N497,000 proposal to N494,000, aiming for a compromise.
As the standoff persists, the nation braces for the impact of the impending strike, with labour adamant on securing better conditions for workers nationwide.
