Kenyan authorities have apprehended Nadeem Anjarwalla, an executive of the cryptocurrency platform Binance, who had fled Nigeria amidst the government’s crackdown on the platform aimed at bolstering the naira.
Anjarwalla, who had previously escaped custody in Nigeria, was located in Kenya, where he is now under the custody of the local police, according to government sources.
Following his escape, various law enforcement agencies including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the International Criminal Police Organization, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Kenyan Police Service have been coordinating efforts to bring Anjarwalla to justice.
The EFCC had confirmed plans to extradite Anjarwalla, citing allegations of tax evasion, currency speculation, and money laundering amounting to $35.4 million against Binance Holdings Limited and its executives.
Efforts to apprehend Anjarwalla involve collaboration with international agencies such as the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation and the governments of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, and Kenya. Anjarwalla is expected to face charges in absentia alongside his company and fellow executive, Tigran Gambaryan.
