Kenneth Okonkwo Leaves Labour Party Over Internal Crisis, Criticizes Peter Obi’s Leadership

Kenneth Okonkwo, former spokesman for the Labour Party’s presidential campaign council, has officially left the party, citing dissatisfaction with Peter Obi’s handling of internal conflicts. Okonkwo’s departure comes after the party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, failed to resolve ongoing issues within the party.

In a statement shared on his social media account, Okonkwo expressed his disappointment with Obi’s leadership abilities, stating, “I no longer have confidence that Peter Obi can build a party capable of overcoming the current political challenges. Even if the people vote for him, he lacks the capacity to secure the mandate.”

Okonkwo continued, “I believed Peter Obi would leverage the momentum to build a robust party of integrity. However, his public declaration that he did not promise to build a strong Labour Party but to solve Nigeria’s problems was disheartening. A solid party base is essential for political success, and this realization led me to question his commitment.”

He highlighted Obi’s failure to support an inclusive convention for the Labour Party, a move that left many members uncertain about the party’s future. “The lack of leadership from Peter Obi has left every member of the Labour Party confused about our direction. When they look to me for answers, I have none, as I do not understand his stance on critical issues.”

Okonkwo also criticized Obi for not openly supporting the Labour Unions, who originally founded the Labour Party to champion workers’ welfare. “The Labour Unions are now fighting criminals attempting to hijack the party, a situation that could have been resolved with a simple statement from Obi,” Okonkwo remarked.

Despite his departure, Okonkwo reaffirmed his commitment to a Nigeria founded on equity, justice, and fairness, where every citizen has the opportunity to aspire to any position without discrimination. He criticized the current leadership of the APC and PDP, stating, “Their combined leadership is crippling Nigeria, leaving the nation economically and politically unstable, forcing people to protest for survival.”
