A group of Jewish priests, under the banner of the Unique Forum of Orthodox Judaism, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The priests, in a letter to the President, emphasized that freeing Kanu would promote peace and stability, particularly in Nigeria’s South East, where tensions have escalated due to his prolonged detention.
Kanu’s family has also raised urgent concerns about his deteriorating health, requesting that President Tinubu permit him to seek medical treatment outside the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja, where he has been held in solitary confinement since his extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021.
In their open letter, the Jewish priests argued that Kanu’s release is vital for national healing. According to Rosh Nasishemtov Ihe Madunweiheyah, the forum leader, Kanu is unjustly detained, and his continued incarceration has contributed to Nigeria’s unrest. He further claimed that the nation’s challenges stem from God’s displeasure over Kanu’s treatment. The priests held a prayer session at the Isiama Afaraukwu palace, where Kanu’s late parents are buried.
Madunweiheyah, along with Elder Okamulata Egbu, co-signed the letter, stressing that Kanu’s struggle is centered on justice for the oppressed people of Biafra. They dismissed allegations that Kanu is Nigeria’s problem, asserting that he is instead a key to its solution.

“We appeal to President Tinubu to release our son and brother, Nnamdi Kanu, to enable him to continue worshiping God and bring peace to this great nation,” the letter reads.
Kanu’s sister, Princess Nnenne Kate Kanu, expressed her gratitude for the group’s solidarity, highlighting the ongoing support from various organizations advocating for her brother’s release. She reiterated that Kanu’s activism has always been for the betterment of the Biafran people, emphasizing that he had foreseen Nigeria’s current crisis but was ignored.
Princess Kate further stressed Kanu’s concern for Nigerians’ suffering, regardless of their ethnicity or religion. While he opposes violence in the South East, Kanu condemns the actions of armed herdsmen terrorizing the region. She also voiced alarm over his worsening health condition, urging President Tinubu to allow Kanu to receive specialized medical care outside the DSS detention facility.
