IPOB Urges South-East Youths to Reject British Army Recruitment

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called on South-East youths to reject the ongoing recruitment drive by the British Army, describing it as a “deceptive” tactic meant to exploit them. According to IPOB, this recruitment is a continuation of historical exploitation, where African soldiers, including many from Nigeria, were used and discarded by the British during the World Wars.

In a statement released on Saturday, Emma Powerful, the spokesperson for IPOB, warned Biafrans against enlisting in the British Army. He emphasized that the British government does not have the best interests of Biafrans at heart, citing past instances where African soldiers were not recognized or compensated after serving in British wars. Instead, they were sent back to Africa without any benefits, unlike their British counterparts who were rewarded and honored.

Powerful highlighted that the British Army during World War I included significant numbers of African soldiers from Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Uganda, and Malawi, who fought without acknowledgment or adequate compensation. The statement also pointed out that the British have a strict immigration policy for Africans but are now offering easy access for them to join their army, raising questions about the true intentions behind this recruitment drive.

IPOB strongly urges Biafran youths to avoid becoming “sacrificial lambs” for a nation that has historically not recognized their humanity or rights. They argue that Britain’s past actions, including its role in the Biafran genocide, demonstrate a pattern of exploitation and neglect towards Biafrans. The group also appeals to parents to guide their children away from this recruitment, warning against being lured by promises of citizenship or financial rewards.

Instead of joining foreign armies, IPOB encourages the youth to focus on the fight for a free and independent Biafra, where they can thrive without external exploitation. They also reiterated their call for the peaceful and democratic exit of Biafra from Nigeria and the release of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently detained in Abuja.
