Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the legal counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has called on the Federal Government to launch an immediate investigation into an Austria-based Nigerian, identified only as “Mr. Kingsley,” for allegedly inciting violence against Igbo children. Kingsley reportedly called for the poisoning of Igbo children, a statement that has sparked outrage and concern.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Ejiofor criticized what he described as the Federal Government’s selective approach to addressing hate speech. He emphasized the need for swift action, noting that despite the seriousness of Kingsley’s remarks, no official action has been taken yet.
Ejiofor’s statement reads in part: “The reprehensible hate speech from ‘Kingsley’ in Austria and the subsequent reaction from Amaka Patience Sunnberger in Canada have highlighted a concerning trend. The Federal Government acted quickly in reaching out to Canadian authorities to investigate Amaka, leading to her suspension from work. However, we have yet to see a similar response regarding Kingsley, who initiated this dangerous discourse.”
Ejiofor underscored the urgency of addressing Kingsley’s comments, which he says have “shocked and horrified many,” especially following the incident on August 29, 2024. He urged the Federal Government, particularly Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, to collaborate with Austrian authorities to ensure that Kingsley is thoroughly investigated and held accountable for his actions.
“No one should be allowed to incite violence or spread hate without facing consequences,” Ejiofor stated. “By taking decisive action, the government can send a clear message that hate speech and calls for violence will not be tolerated, no matter where they originate.”
Ejiofor also hinted at the need for public apologies from individuals who, in the past, sowed the seeds of hatred that are now manifesting in such dangerous rhetoric. He expressed concern that the negative consequences of hate speech are being felt not only within Nigeria but also globally.
