The Imo State House of Assembly has ordered the state’s postsecondary educational institutions to make sure that its graduating students do not experience unjustified delays in the processing and distribution of their transcripts, certificates, and results statements.
The Chief Sponsor and Member for the Ezinihitte Mbaise State Constituency, Hon. Dr. Henry Agbasonu, moved the motion and voiced concern over the hold-up in the release of graduating students’ transcripts, certificates, and results statements.
According to him, it has become the “Culture of Corruption” of Tertiary Institutions in Imo State to deliberately delay the issuance of transcripts, statements of results, and certificates to graduating students.
The chairman of the House Committee on Education, Agbasonu, clarified that the lack of results and certificates in Imo State’s higher education institutions has become a source of great frustration and discouragement, discouraging prospective students from applying to the state’s higher education institutions.
He ascribed this to corrupt inclinations, in which individuals deliberately create obstacles for others in order to deprive them of limited resources.

“Some students may need to further their education in other Institutions but face very difficult tasks in getting transcripts.
“It has become difficult for graduates to do their Masters and postgraduate courses, because of the difficulty it takes in having first degree certificates issued to them.”
He also expressed his regret that the results of the students who took the Basic Education and Certificate Examination (BECE) and the First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) in 2020 and 2023 have not yet been made public. He pointed out that the Ministry of Education administers both exams through the Examination Development Center, or EDC.
He maintained that the Ministry of Education lacks a convincing justification or explanation for the four years in a row—2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023—that the results have not been released.
He then urged his fellow senators to back his resolution, urging Governor Hope Uzodimma to order the Ministry of Education to address the irregularity.
The lawmakers who submitted excellent submissions overwhelmingly supported the motion, which was seconded by Hon. Barrister Chisom Ojukwu and co-sponsored by Hon. Okey Udeze (Ideato North), Hon. Dr. Francis Uzoma Osuoha (Ohani/Egbema), Hon. Engr. Uche Francis Agabige (Orsu), Hon. Barrister Chisom Ojukwu (Nkwerre), Hon. Barrister Dominic Ezerioha (Oru-West), Hon. Chief Samuel Ogbunikpa (Okigwe), and Hon. Chief Benneth Ozioma Ebonine (Njaba).
The Speaker, Rt Hon., asked the management teams of Imo State’s post-secondary institutions to make sure that their graduating students are not subjected to excessive and unjustified delays in the processing and release of the statement of result, transcripts, and certificate, since there was not a single voice objecting to the motion.
Additionally, they pleaded with Governor Uzodimma to order the Ministry of Education and EDC to make the BECE and FSLC results for the years 2020 to 2023 available.
