Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has addressed recent media speculations regarding his potential departure from the party amidst leadership turmoil ahead of the 2027 election.
Speaking to journalists in Gombe State after inaugurating a borehole at the Tike Pantami ram market on Sunday, Obi dismissed rumors of him defecting to the Social Democratic Party to pursue his political ambitions.
In response to statements made by Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) spokesman Benson Upah, affirming Obi’s freedom to leave the LP, the former Anambra State Governor emphasized his commitment to the party. He stated, “No, there is no such thing. I’m for peace, I like peace. I believe we are one people. Our concentration should be on peace, and I believe that we will resolve all situations.”

Regarding potential collaboration with former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Obi emphasized his focus on Nigeria’s immediate success and the welfare of its citizens. He expressed, “Well, I’m more interested now in Nigeria’s success today than tomorrow. We are always concentrating on the election rather than what Nigerians are going through. My commitment is about Nigerians living in a better society, given a better life, and that’s my concern.”
Addressing concerns over the recent electricity tariff hike, particularly for Band A consumers, Obi urged stakeholders to devise strategic solutions to alleviate the burden, especially for low-income areas. He advocated for a system where urban areas pay more while rural areas receive subsidies, emphasizing the need for equitable access to essential services.
