The House of Representatives in Nigeria passed a bill seeking to create more seats for women in legislative bodies at both the national and state levels. The bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu, aims to address the persistent underrepresentation of women in government.
“Gender equality and representation are fundamental to our democracy,” said one of the bill’s sponsors, Joshua Gana. “This bill will empower women and ensure their voices are heard in shaping the country’s future.”
The bill proposes reserving specific seats for women in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly. It also establishes special constituencies to ensure women’s direct participation in legislative processes.
While the bill received widespread support, some lawmakers expressed concerns about potential conflicts with the Constitution. The bill now moves to relevant committees for further deliberation.
