In response to the recent killing of seven Nigerians in Anambra State, the House of Representatives has pressed Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Ajayi, to identify and prosecute the perpetrators. The tragic incident occurred in Ifite-Awka, near Nnamdi Azikiwe University, when gunmen suspected to be cult members attacked the area, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals and leaving others severely injured.
During a House session on Tuesday, Yusuf Gagdi, a representative from Plateau State, highlighted that the victims, hailing from Plateau’s Kanam Local Government, were law-abiding citizens engaged in honest work. Describing the event as a violation of Nigerians’ constitutional rights to safety and freedom of movement, Gagdi called for immediate government intervention to prevent the recurrence of such violence.
Supporting the motion, lawmakers stressed the need for a national approach to addressing security issues across Nigeria, with Dekeri Anamero from Edo State calling for a broad investigation into nationwide security threats. Additionally, Mark Esset, a lawmaker from the People’s Democratic Party, expressed concern over persistent insecurity despite substantial government spending on security and defense, urging heads of security agencies to brief the House on their strategies for safeguarding lives and property.
