House of Representatives Denounces NLC, TUC for Spreading False Information on Lawmakers’ Salaries

The House of Representatives has strongly criticized the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for disseminating what it calls “misleading information” about the earnings of its members, labeling it as an attempt to incite public animosity towards lawmakers and undermine the credibility of the legislative body.

In a statement released by its spokesperson, Akin Rotimi, the House condemned the actions of organized labor, warning that such misinformation could fuel public resentment and erode trust in the legislature. The statement emphasized the importance of holding accountable those who undermine the nation’s economy.

Acknowledging the recent industrial action by the NLC and TUC over negotiations for a new national minimum wage, the House assured its commitment to engaging stakeholders for the benefit of Nigerians. It reiterated Speaker Abbas Tajudeen’s advocacy for a living wage and better working conditions while urging caution to prevent adverse economic consequences like inflation and job losses.

The House expressed concern over the shutdown of critical infrastructure during the strike, deeming it as economic sabotage. It criticized the leadership of organized labor for allegedly exacerbating the suffering of ordinary citizens and emphasized the need for transparent dialogue rather than spreading misinformation.

In response to persistent false narratives about lawmakers’ salaries, the House urged union leaders to return to the negotiation table in good faith to achieve a balanced outcome. It emphasized its commitment to representing the interests of Nigerians and called for an end to the spread of inaccuracies for political gain.

The statement comes amidst ongoing negotiations between labor unions and the Federal Government regarding a new national minimum wage, with the strike being suspended for one week after discussions.
