General Murtala Mohammed had nothing; he died poor – Ambassador Aminu Wali

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Bashir Wali, shared insights into the modest lifestyle of the late former Head of State, General Murtala Mohammed, revealing that he passed away with little wealth.

In an interview with Daily Trust on Sunday, Wali, 83, reflected on his close relationship with Murtala, emphasizing their familial bond. He served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to China from 2014 to 2015 and held various prestigious positions, including Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Discussing the perception of his own wealth stemming from his association with Murtala, Wali dismissed such notions, highlighting Murtala’s indifference to material gain. He recalled a conversation where Murtala, unperturbed by solicitations for favors, shrugged off suggestions of acquiring oil blocs.

Regrettably, Murtala passed away before any potential endeavors could materialize. Despite his leadership role, Murtala remained financially humble, often facing financial challenges, including difficulties in paying school fees for his children.

Wali underscored Murtala’s steadfast commitment to integrity, noting his reluctance to engage in practices that compromised his principles. Murtala valued his dignity above material wealth, choosing not to succumb to pressures to acquire riches at the expense of his honor.

The narrative sheds light on Murtala’s legacy as a leader who prioritized principles over personal gain, exemplifying integrity in public service.
