G60 Lawmakers Applaud New Speaker, Call for Bye-Elections to Fill Vacant Seats in Rivers State Assembly

A coalition of opposition lawmakers, dubbed the G60, has lauded the appointment of Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo as the new speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, representing Bonny LGA constituency. This move follows the resignation of Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie, now serving as the Chief of Staff to the state government, and the subsequent declaration of 27 seats vacant due to defections from the PDP to the APC.

In a statement issued by spokesperson Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the G60 expressed confidence in the new speaker and urged him to collaborate with Governor Siminalayi Fubara to uphold the democratic interests of Rivers State residents.

The coalition emphasized that Jumbo’s appointment signals an end to the alleged political chaos and legislative misconduct attributed to former assembly members.

Additionally, they called upon Governor Fubara to initiate legal proceedings against the dismissed lawmakers, urging their prosecution for alleged impersonation through the Magistrate Court.

Furthermore, the G60 urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to swiftly organize bye-elections to fill the 27 vacant seats in the State House of Assembly, ensuring continued representation for the affected constituencies.
