Panic erupted at a construction site near the Ekwulobia Bridge in Aguata Local Government Area, Anambra State, on Saturday, when workers uncovered the corpse of a recently deceased woman. The site, part of an ongoing project to erect the “Light of the Nation” tower, quickly became the center of attention for residents and passersby.
The “Light of the Nation” tower, a project designed to symbolize Anambra State’s identity and beautify the environment, is part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s broader initiative to transform Anambra into a smart mega city. However, the discovery of the body has overshadowed progress at the site.
According to eyewitness accounts, construction workers unearthed the corpse while carrying out their duties. Although the exact circumstances surrounding the burial remain unclear, sources say the body appeared to have been interred recently.
A local resident, Uche, expressed the shock felt by the community:
“The discovery caused panic as residents and onlookers rushed to the site, hoping to identify the victim. Some recognized the deceased as a woman whose husband died about five years ago.”
The discovery has raised questions about the identity of the victim and the events leading to her untimely death.
Community leaders and local authorities were promptly informed of the incident. The Chairman of Aguata Local Government Area, Dr. Chibueze Ofobuike, confirmed that his office had been alerted and that efforts were underway to investigate the matter. He stated:
“Our men are being mobilized to the scene to assess the situation and arrange for the proper evacuation of the corpse.”
Despite repeated attempts, the construction workers at the site declined to comment on the discovery.
As of Sunday, a large crowd continued to gather around the site, drawn by curiosity and concern. The state police, however, have yet to issue an official statement. Efforts to reach the state police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
