Finidi George Steps Down as Super Eagles Coach Amid Controversy

Finidi George, the former Ajax winger, has officially resigned as the head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles. The news was confirmed by former Super Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, through a post on X.com on Saturday.

Ibitoye shared, “Breaking news: Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has stepped down from his position as the #NGSuperEagles manager.”

George’s resignation comes on the heels of the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) controversial decision to bring in a foreign coach to oversee the team, a move made despite George’s recent appointment in May.

The 53-year-old coach took over after Jose Peseiro’s contract ended in February, having previously served as Peseiro’s assistant for nearly two years. However, the Super Eagles’ underwhelming performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin has resulted in George’s demotion.

As part of the changes, George’s one-year contract will be downgraded, with his monthly salary reduced from N15 million to N5 million. Additionally, his chosen assistants will be replaced by the new foreign coach’s staff.

In a recent meeting with Sports Minister John Enoh, George voiced his frustrations over the NFF’s lack of support and raised concerns about the commitment of Nigeria’s top players during the crucial World Cup qualifiers.
