The Federal Government has taken a significant step towards curbing negative portrayals in Nigerian cinema by prohibiting money rituals and the glorification of vices in films.
Shaibu Husseini, the Executive Director and CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), made this announcement during a National Stakeholders Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood in Enugu.
This event, organized by the NFVCB and Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa, brought together movie producers, directors, actors, and industry leaders from across the country.
Husseini emphasized the urgency of addressing industry challenges and highlighted the Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa’s approval of the regulation to ban money rituals, ritual killings, tobacco, nicotine products, and the glamorization of crimes in movies, musical videos, and skits.
The NFVCB plans to conduct extensive awareness programs in schools, communities, and faith groups to educate audiences about the dangers of smoking depicted in movies.
Acknowledging the influential role of the film industry, Husseini stressed the importance of promoting positive health messages and collaborating to develop content that discourages smoking.
This initiative reflects NFVCB’s commitment to fostering a healthier cinematic environment and its proactive approach to fulfilling its mandate.”
