The Enugu State Police Command has refuted a report claiming that eleven people were kidnapped at the Amechi-Idodo area on the Enugu/Abakaliki highway. According to the police, the report is inaccurate and designed to incite public fear. The incident, which occurred on July 16, 2024, involved an attempted abduction rather than a successful kidnapping.
Upon receiving a distress call, a joint security team swiftly responded and reached the Enugu/Ebonyi States border point along the Enugu/Abakaliki Expressway. They successfully rescued thirteen occupants from a Nissan commercial bus. However, three individuals who fled into nearby bushes during the attack are still missing.
Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu has ordered continuous efforts to locate and rescue the missing individuals and to apprehend the perpetrators. He emphasized the commitment to maintaining strong security measures on major highways through collaboration with security forces in neighboring states.
CP Kanayo also urged journalists to verify information before publication to prevent spreading misinformation and causing unnecessary alarm among the public.
