Enugu Youths Advocate for Peace, Urge Suspension of Nationwide Protest

The Enugu Innovative Youths, a prominent youth organization in Enugu State, has called for the suspension of the proposed national protest set to commence on Thursday, August 1. This plea for calm was made public through a communiqué issued following their recent meeting in the Enugu State capital.

Presenting the communiqué, Chairman Collins Nonso highlighted the nation’s current challenges, including economic hardships exacerbated by the removal of the fuel subsidy, escalating food prices, and the naira’s depreciation. Nonso emphasized the dire situation faced by Nigerian youths, who are grappling with a bleak future amidst these economic difficulties.

“The proposed nationwide protest, while understandable, is ill-timed given the current state of our country,” Nonso stated. “We urge our fellow youths to reconsider and refrain from participating in this protest.”

The group specifically called for peace in Enugu State, praising the efforts of Governor Peter Mbah, whose leadership has brought significant improvements across various sectors. They warned against a repeat of the 2020 ENDSARS protests, which were marred by violence and destruction after being hijacked by hoodlums.

“We witnessed the devastation in Enugu during the October 2020 ENDSARS protests,” they recalled. “We cannot allow a recurrence of such chaos that threatens our common heritage.”

The youth body stressed that Enugu State, known for its peace and productivity, must not fall back into anarchy. They underscored the importance of preserving the infrastructural progress achieved over the past 14 months under Governor Mbah’s administration.

“We must protect the beauty and development of Enugu,” they urged. “Any protest here would undermine the efforts to revive our city’s aesthetics and functionality.”

Concerns about the safety of participants were also raised, with the group cautioning against the potential loss of lives, as seen during the previous ENDSARS protests. They pointed out that hoodlums could exploit the protest to carry out violent acts against the peaceful youth of Enugu.

“The safety of our youths is paramount,” they insisted. “We must avoid any situation that could lead to unnecessary loss of life.”
