Enugu State has partnered with Nigerian diasporan investors to develop a cutting-edge medical city, this represents a $300 million investment.
The ambitious project aims to position Enugu as a premier destination for medical tourism in Africa. The state will contribute 100 hectares of land, receiving a 10% equity stake in the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) created for the venture.
Governor Mbah, while welcoming the team from African Medical City—comprising mainly Nigerian doctors based abroad—emphasized the project’s significance. He underscored the state’s commitment to swiftly fulfill its responsibilities to ensure the project’s timely completion. Mbah highlighted that modern medical facilities are essential, noting that Nigerians currently spend over $1 billion annually on medical tourism.
“This initiative aligns with our campaign promise to grow Enugu’s GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion. We recognize that this growth must be private-sector-driven, with government facilitation,”** Mbah stated. He assured investors of the state’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and integrity throughout the process.
Dr. Ethelbert Nwanegbo, Chairman of African Medical City, praised Enugu’s investment-friendly environment as a key factor in their decision to establish the medical city in the state.
“Our vision extends beyond a single medical building; we are creating a comprehensive medical city to revolutionize healthcare in Africa,” Nwanegbo explained.
Dr. Uchenna Ogbozor, President and CEO of African Medical City, confirmed the organization’s readiness to commence work immediately.
“African Medical City is a robust organization with 21 dedicated members. This $300 million investment will be supported by the government’s provision of 100 hectares of land,” Ogbozor noted.
