Enugu State Police Restrict Movements During Local Government Elections

As Enugu State prepares for the 2024 Local Government Council Election on Saturday, September 21, the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) has finalized arrangements for polling across all wards and local government areas. To ensure a peaceful and secure electoral process, Commissioner of Police CP Kanayo Uzuegbu has announced a comprehensive deployment of the state’s security personnel and operational resources.

In preparation for the elections, CP Kanayo has issued a restriction on human and vehicular movement between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on election day. Exemptions will be granted only to essential services, including medical and fire response teams, authorized media personnel, election officials, and accredited observers. VIPs under police protection have also been cautioned that their security escorts are prohibited from accompanying them to the polling units.

The Commissioner emphasized that election security will be a coordinated effort involving all security agencies in the state. He warned that any form of electoral violence, whether before, during, or after the elections, will be met with swift and decisive action. CP Kanayo urged political parties and their supporters to adhere strictly to the election guidelines set by ENSIEC, reiterating the importance of orderly conduct throughout the electoral process.

Parents and guardians were urged to dissuade their children from being recruited as political thugs, as those caught will face severe legal consequences.

The Police Commissioner encouraged all eligible voters in Enugu State to come out in large numbers to exercise their civic duty. He urged them to maintain orderly behavior at the polling units and to report any suspicious activities or electoral infractions to the nearest police station or security personnel. Voters can also report incidents via the command’s emergency hotlines: 08032003702, 08098880172, or 08086671202, or email infoenugupolice@gmail.com.
