Enugu State Government Cracks Down on Sale of Diseased Animals in Meat Markets

In a decisive move to protect public health, the Enugu State Government has issued a stern warning to butchers and poultry farmers, prohibiting the sale of animals and chickens that died from unknown causes. This action follows reports of diseased animals being sold in meat markets across the state.

The warning was delivered in a joint statement by the Enugu State Commissioners for Health, Prof. Ikechukwu Obi, and Agriculture, Mr. Patrick Ubru, on Tuesday. The government made it clear that severe sanctions await those involved in the illegal and hazardous practice of selling dead animals.

According to the statement, the crackdown was initiated after tips from concerned members of the public indicated that animals dying from flu and other diseases were being sold in meat markets. In response, the state has mobilized its public health, veterinary, and disease surveillance teams to investigate these claims thoroughly.

The commissioners emphasized that selling dead animals poses significant health risks, as it can lead to the spread of zoonotic diseases, which can be transmitted from animals to humans. “This practice is unacceptable and can have dire consequences for public health,” the statement warned.

To prevent the sale of contaminated meat, state health officials have been deployed to inspect livestock farms and abattoirs. Offenders found engaging in this illegal activity will face legal action, the government cautioned.

The Enugu State Government reiterated that selling animals that died from unknown causes outside of standard slaughter methods is a serious crime. “The consumption of such meat can lead to zoonotic diseases, which pose severe health risks and could potentially cause epidemics,” the statement added.

In a bid to safeguard the public, the government urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving the sale of dead animals. The public is encouraged to use the following hotlines to report offenders: 08037178703, 08066865511, 08037431577, or 08033375344.
