The Enugu State Government has expressed strong support for the arrest and prosecution of Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), by Finnish authorities. The government stated that Ekpa’s prosecution would bolster peace, security, and stability in Nigeria’s South-East region.
In a statement issued by Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary to the State Government, the administration of Governor Peter Mbah labeled Ekpa a criminal and a terrorist who exploits the Igbo people under the guise of Biafran agitation. The government emphasized its readiness to provide evidence of Ekpa’s alleged atrocities to aid his trial in Finland or Nigeria.
“The Enugu State Government welcomes the arrest of the Finland-based terrorist, Simon Ekpa. His trial will strengthen peace, security, and stability in the South-East,” Onyia stated.
The Finnish authorities detained Ekpa along with four others, citing suspicion of terrorist activities. A court in Lahti subsequently ordered his remand in prison, following investigations into his alleged involvement in inciting violence in Nigeria.
The Enugu State Government accused Ekpa of orchestrating violence in the South-East region, leading to the loss of lives and destruction of property. The statement further alleged that Ekpa thrives on manipulating emotions, extorting people, and perpetuating chaos, all while residing in Finland.

“Simon Ekpa has, for too long, created a siege mentality in the South-East. He exploits the hardworking and entrepreneurial spirit of Ndigbo, leaving misery and destruction in his wake,” the statement added.
The administration also criticized Ekpa for benefiting financially from the unrest he allegedly incites, describing him as a “murderer, fraudster, and common criminal.”
Governor Mbah’s government reiterated its commitment to peace and stability in the South-East, pledging to collaborate with both Nigerian and Finnish authorities to ensure Ekpa’s prosecution.
“We are ready to provide irrefutable evidence of Simon Ekpa’s involvement in sponsoring atrocities against Ndigbo. Justice must prevail for the sake of peace and the restoration of normalcy in the region,” Onyia emphasized.
