Enugu Rangers FC has called on authorities to investigate an alleged violent attack by Plateau United fans on their players and team bus following a goalless draw on Nigerian Premier League Match Day 11 in Jos. The incident took place after the match concluded, with reports indicating that the fans, angered by the result, damaged Rangers’ team bus and assaulted several players.
Team official Felix Ifeanyi described the incident, stating, “Plateau United fans attacked our bus and physically assaulted our players. The damage done to the bus alone could cost millions to repair. Is this the type of league we aspire to?” A photo obtained from the scene shows a Rangers player with a visibly injured, bloodied face.
In a formal statement, Enugu Rangers management confirmed that a petition has been submitted to the appropriate authorities, calling for a thorough investigation into the attack. “This assault was unwarranted,” the statement reads. “We are determined to pursue justice for our players and team members. A formal complaint has been filed, and we will not relent until this issue is adequately addressed.”
Responding to the incident, Plateau United issued a statement clarifying that the attack occurred outside the stadium, asserting that their security responsibility ended once the visiting team left the stadium grounds. They denied involvement in the incident, explaining that the assault reportedly took place nearly two kilometers from the stadium.

“At the end of the match, Rangers’ players and officials left the stadium without any incidents. Additionally, our technical team held a post-match conference without issues. The attack allegedly happened once they were beyond our jurisdiction,” the Plateau United statement read. “While we condemn all forms of violence, our club was not involved in the incident and remains committed to upholding a peaceful environment within the stadium.”
Plateau United’s General Manager, Habila Hosea Mutla, reiterated the club’s stance, stating, “We believe in the principles of fair play and are open to any result on the pitch—win, lose, or draw. We will do our best to prevent any forms of disorder within the stadium premises.”
As the investigation proceeds, both clubs have condemned the violence and underscored the importance of maintaining safety for players and fans alike. This incident highlights ongoing concerns within the Nigerian football league about fan conduct and the need for stringent security protocols.
