Enugu: Prices Of Garri, Rice Record More Than 50% Increase

In Enugu city, the cost of rice and cassava flakes, or “garri,” has increased by more than 50%, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

During a market survey on Sunday in Enugu, the NAN correspondent noticed that the cost of staples like rice and garri had gone up by 50% in the city.

A 5-litre liter is offered for between ₦2,200 and ₦2,700, while a cup of garri, which cost ₦120 in January, now costs ₦150, according to the poll.

Comparably, a bag of produce now costs ₦29,000 instead of the ₦18,500 it did in January.

A fifty-kilogram bag of foreign rice at the Garki Market in Enugu used to cost between ₦55,000 and ₦60,000, but now it costs between ₦78,000 and ₦80,000, depending on the brand.

The only way to lower the exorbitant price of garri, according to Mrs. Bridget Ugwu, a garri vendor at New Market, would be to secure farmlands and halt the export of the product to other nations.

According to Ugwu, the commodity’s exports had an impact on the nation’s agricultural supply.

Mr. Ochuba Ozor, a rice vendor at Mayor Market, warned that unless the government took immediate action to alleviate food insecurity, the high price of rice in the nation will continue.

Ozor claimed that since every item’s price increased, less people were coming into his store to purchase food.

An anonymous buyer blamed the elimination of subsidies from petroleum items for the high expense of living in the nation.
