On October 28, 2024, around 7:10 p.m., police officers from the Unity Division of the Enugu State Command thwarted a kidnapping attempt along the Neke-Uno section of the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Road. Following an intense exchange of gunfire, the suspected kidnappers retreated with injuries, leaving behind an AK-47 rifle, two magazines loaded with twenty-two rounds, and an additional chain of thirty-nine live bullets.
During further tactical operations that night, a lecturer from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, who had been reported kidnapped on October 26, 2024, managed to escape his captors amidst the pressure exerted by the ongoing police efforts.
The Enugu State Police Command also addressed circulating rumors of a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer being abducted while traveling from Benue along this road. The Command clarified that no such incident has been reported in Enugu, urging the public to disregard baseless claims regarding safety on the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Road.
To enhance public confidence, Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu has directed the deployment of additional officers and resources to strengthen patrols and security measures along this route and across Enugu State.
