The Nigeria Union of Journalists Enugu State Council, under the leadership of Comrade Sam Udekwe, is urging for the complete independence and protection of journalists as they fulfill their vital roles.
In a statement issued by the State Secretary, Dame Ifeoma Amuta, to commemorate World Press Freedom Day, the NUJ emphasizes the critical importance of journalists and the media in disseminating information and fostering national development.
The statement highlights the numerous risks journalists face while carrying out their duties as guardians of society and underscores the need for improved welfare and working conditions for media personnel. It also calls for stronger enforcement of the Freedom of Information Act.
The NUJ Enugu State Council emphasizes the importance of professionalism among its members and stresses the role of the media as the fourth estate of the realm, responsible for holding the government accountable to the people.
With this year’s theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of Environmental Crisis,” the statement calls for increased security and respect for the press, particularly in light of the current global environmental challenges.
The NUJ Enugu State Council concludes with blessings for all media workers and a call for continued dedication to their noble profession.
Signed,
Dame Ifeoma Amuta
