Enugu Government Begins Resettlement of Slum Dwellers to Modern Housing Estates

The Enugu State Government has approved the resettlement of residents living in the Agu-Owa and Ugbo-Lawrence areas, categorizing these zones as urban slums. This move is part of the state’s broader urban renewal project aimed at transforming these areas into modern residential hubs.

Following a meeting led by Governor Peter Mbah, the State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Gerald Otiji, announced that the affected residents will be relocated to the Akpuoga Nike Estate, a development equipped with essential amenities and a secure environment. Each family will receive a two-bedroom flat and a Certificate of Occupancy, ensuring their legal ownership of the property.

The government’s urban renewal initiative will first focus on Agu-Owa in Trans-Ekulu and Ugbo-Lawrence in Independence Layout, serving as pilot schemes for the larger project. The Akpuoga Nike Estate will feature paved roads, electricity, recreational facilities, and a smart school, creating a fully integrated community.

“The Exco has approved the relocation of urban slums in line with our commitment to improving living standards. We urge the affected residents to cooperate with the government to fully benefit from these plans,” Otiji said.

Additionally, the Commissioner for Trade, Investment, and Industry, Adaora Chukwu, revealed the state’s approval for the development of a long-dormant property in Abuja by Tout Moi Nigeria Limited. This development, consisting of 43 luxury housing units, will boost the state’s revenue by an estimated 300%.
