Enugu Authorities Seal Building After Carpenter’s Tragic Death; Owner in Police Custody

In a swift response to the unfortunate death of a carpenter at a construction site, the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) has sealed off a two-storey building under construction. The incident, which occurred on July 9th, 2024, involved the collapse of a section of the structure, resulting in the carpenter’s death.

The Enugu Police Command’s Abakpa Division has detained the building owner as part of the investigation into the incident. According to reports, the accident happened at around 9 am when a part of the building located along Ugwunwani Road off Cornerstone Bus Stop gave way.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the carpenter, a native of Cross River State, was working on the planks used in the construction when the newly introduced step collapsed. This tragic event has prompted immediate action from both the ECTDA and the local police.

Upon visiting the site, it was confirmed that the ECTDA had sealed the entire building. An ECTDA staff member indicated that they would review the project’s approval status before deciding on further actions. Meanwhile, a source from the Abakpa Police Division confirmed that the property owner remains in custody, pending the outcome of the investigation.
