#EndbadGovernance: Igbo Elders Disapprove Participation in National Protest

The Igbo Elders Consultative Forum has made a definitive statement, announcing that the South-East will not engage in the proposed national protest. This decision, revealed during a press briefing in Abuja, underscores their dedication to peace and stability in the region.

Chief (Dr.) Simon Okeke and Prof. Charles Nwekeakwu, the Chairman and Secretary of the forum, respectively, called on all Nigerians to strive for a prosperous, just, and equitable society. They highlighted the Igbo community’s commitment to collaborating with other ethnic groups to restructure Nigeria for the benefit of all its citizens.

The Igbo Elders also condemned recent inflammatory remarks by Bayo Onanuga, a spokesperson for President Tinubu, who had wrongfully associated the Igbo people with the national protest and accused presidential candidate Peter Obi of leading the demonstration.

The forum urged President Tinubu to address these misleading comments from his spokesperson, stressing that such actions could foster unnecessary animosity against the Igbo people. They also demanded accountability from the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) for any violence directed at the Igbo community or Peter Obi.

Additionally, the Igbo Elders reiterated their call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, seeing it as a crucial step towards resolving the security issues in the South-East.

The forum expressed that the Igbo people are currently in mourning for prominent leaders such as Engr. Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Sir (Arc.) Ferdinand Agu, and Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Uba, and will not be sidetracked by the proposed protest.

Before his passing, Chief Iwuanyanwu emphasized on behalf of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Worldwide that the Igbo community would not partake in any protests at this juncture. The Igbo people are focused on working with other ethnic groups to achieve national prosperity, justice, and peace.

The Igbo Elders called for mutual respect among all Nigerian ethnicities, asserting their role in promoting peace and demanding the same from others. They condemned any attempts to spread malicious information suggesting Igbo involvement in the protests, labeling it as a provocation.

Finally, they appealed to President Tinubu to ensure a peaceful resolution to the security challenges in the South-East, including the release of Nnamdi Kanu. They reaffirmed that the Igbo community is not protesting but mourning the loss of their esteemed leaders.
