El-Rufai Files Lawsuit Against Kaduna Assembly Over Alleged N432 Billion Misappropriation

Former Governor Nasir El-Rufai has initiated legal action against the Kaduna State House of Assembly, contesting allegations that his administration misappropriated N432 billion and left the state in significant debt.

On Wednesday, El-Rufai filed a fundamental rights enforcement case at the Federal High Court in Kaduna, arguing that the Assembly’s committee denied him a fair hearing.

El-Rufai personally appeared to file the lawsuit, which challenges the committee’s report accusing him of corruption. His media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, shared a statement on social media detailing the case.

Represented by his lawyer, Abdulhakeem Mustapha, El-Rufai contends that the committee’s actions violated his right to a fair hearing as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights. The lawsuit seeks a declaration that the committee’s report is unconstitutional and void.

The state Assembly’s ad hoc committee had previously submitted a report in June, scrutinizing the financial dealings, loans, and contracts of El-Rufai’s administration. According to committee chairman Henry Zacharia, loans secured during El-Rufai’s tenure were allegedly misused, with procedural lapses in their acquisition.

Assembly Speaker Yusuf Liman further alleged that the misappropriation of N432 billion under El-Rufai’s administration has imposed significant financial burdens on the state.
