The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to initiate legal proceedings against Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, for alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency, the naira. Okechukwu faces three charges related to spraying and tampering with N500 notes during social events, contravening the Central Bank Act of 2007.
According to court documents, Okechukwu will appear before Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court, Lagos, on Wednesday. The charges, filed on April 4th by EFCC prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) and a team of seven lawyers, detail instances where Okechukwu purportedly tampered with N500 notes during social gatherings, violating Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007.
The allegations include incidents at Eko Hotel in February 2024 and previous occasions in Lagos, dating back to 2020 and January 2024. The EFCC’s move follows similar actions against public figures, notably cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, who recently faced prosecution on comparable charges and received a six-month jail sentence.
