The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has unmasked a staggering web of corruption involving 58 former governors, accused of looting, embezzling, or misappropriating an eye-popping sum of N2.187 trillion over the past 25 years.
The EFCC’s exposé, which excludes seized assets and ongoing investigations, sheds light on the rampant corruption plaguing Nigeria’s state governments. This colossal amount surpasses the 2024 budget of Lagos State and the combined budgets of all South-East states, underscoring the magnitude of the alleged graft.
The accused ex-governors, hailing from diverse regions, reflect the widespread nature of corruption across Nigeria. Since the dawn of democracy in 1999, 170 governors have held office across the nation’s 36 states.
