EEDC Clarifies Operational Status Amid Mainpower Takeover in Enugu State

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has clarified that it remains fully operational despite recent changes involving its subsidiary, Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited, now licensed by the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC).

The shift in regulation follows the transfer of oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the EERC, allowing Mainpower to begin electricity distribution in Enugu State under an interim operating license granted by the EERC. This regulatory shift has led to public confusion regarding EEDC’s ongoing role.

In a press briefing on Friday, EEDC’s Head of Communications, Emeka Ezeh, reassured customers, vendors, and stakeholders of the company’s continued operations. He emphasized, “EEDC remains the holding company for Mainpower, actively overseeing electricity distribution across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo States.”

Ezeh urged Enugu electricity users to stay calm, confirming that Mainpower, as EEDC’s subsidiary, is dedicated to efficient and reliable service in Enugu State.

He also noted the significance of the recent Electricity Act 2023, which enables states to independently generate, transmit, and distribute electricity within their jurisdictions. This law has transitioned regulatory authority from NERC to the state-run EERC in Enugu.

With Enugu State’s newly established regulatory framework, the government is now empowered to oversee its electricity market and issue operational licenses to new investors, fostering local energy development.
