EEDC ₦2.1bn estimated billing in Enugu communities: Lawmaker petitions NASS

In an effort to find out why certain towns in the Ohafia Local Government area of Enugu have been without electricity for five years, lawmakers have filed a petition with the National Assembly.

He claimed that despite the five years of blackout, the impacted villages were still receiving astronomical bills totaling ₦2.1 billion.

In a petition he filed on Friday with the House of Representatives in Abuja, Osonwa stated that the communities wanted an explanation as to how they came up with a ₦2.1 billion bill while going five years without power.

He claims that numerous attempts have been made, but in vain, to find a peaceful way to resolve the unresolved problems caused by the ongoing darkness in the impacted villages.

He claimed that despite attempts made by the affected area’s deputy governor of Abia State, Mr. Ikechukwu Emetu, to guarantee that the communities enjoy Christmas with power, success was not accomplished.

He claimed that the Deputy Governor used all of his authority to fix downed cables and fallen poles, and that the community had spent a lot of money on them, all in vain.

“The governor and his deputy have agreed to resolve the alleged vandalism, which is one of the lingering issues,” according to the Enugu electricity distribution company (EEDC).

He claimed that out of all the concerns brought forth by EEDC, the approximately ₦2.1 billion debt owed to the communities and its accumulation were the most concerning. He argued.

“They are telling us that if we pay them the money, they will give us power, but we are telling them to give us power first, and then we will settle the ‘unpaid debt.'”

According to him, the anticipated bill that EEDC had given the communities was unreasonable and unnecessary.

He claimed that an outstanding obligation of ₦600,000 for the power he consumed was given to even his deceased biological father.
