Tragedy rocked Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, AE-FUNAI, Ebonyi, with the death of a 200-level student, Ogboji David Chukwuebuka, who collapsed on campus. According to reports, the terrible incident occurred during a football competition organised by the school’s Directorate of Sports of Student Union Government, SUG. The undergraduate student from the Department of Economics at the institution was chosen by his faculty to compete against the Faculty of Biological Science during the university’s freshers’ league tournament.
Ogboji, also known as Bernardo, reportedly collapsed on the pitch during the competition and was rushed to a university clinic before being sent to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Nwankwo Polycarp Chigozie, the school’s SUG Director of Sports, issued a statement confirming this.

He said “It is with a heavy heart that we bring you the news of the passing of one of our students. Ogboji David Chukwuebuka, a 200-level student from the Economics Department, he collapsed while playing for his faculty in the freshers’ league tournament on the school field.
“Despite being rushed to the clinic and then referred to the hospital, he was confirmed dead upon arrival. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and fellow students during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.”
