The Department of State Services (DSS) has permitted Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to see his personal physician. This development comes after significant pressure and legal advocacy from Kanu’s Special Counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor.
On Wednesday, Ejimakor revealed that the preliminary medical examination conducted by Kanu’s doctor indicated several complex health issues. The findings necessitate urgent hospital care for a comprehensive diagnosis. Ejimakor stated, “Today, the DSS finally allowed Nnamdi Kanu’s physician to see him. The doctor’s initial report highlights complex medical conditions that require immediate hospital evaluation.”
This update follows a statement from Ejimakor on Tuesday, where he raised alarms over Kanu’s deteriorating health. According to Ejimakor, Kanu has been experiencing severe symptoms, including shortness of breath, low blood pressure, and general malaise. These symptoms prompted a formal request from Kanu’s legal team to the DSS, seeking medical attention from Kanu’s personal doctor. Despite the urgency, the doctor was initially denied access when he arrived at DSS headquarters on Tuesday.

Kanu, who is on trial for terrorism charges linked to his advocacy for Biafra’s independence, has been in DSS custody since his extraordinary rendition from Kenya in June 2021 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. His prolonged detention and the conditions of his confinement have been a source of international concern and have sparked widespread calls for his release.
