After a prolonged legal standoff, the Department of State Security (DSS) has granted Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), access to his legal team. This decision, approved by DSS Director-General Adeola Ajayi, marks a significant development in Kanu’s legal journey.
Kanu, who has been held by the DSS on terrorism charges since his disputed extradition from Kenya in June 2021, has faced restricted access to his lawyers, sparking numerous legal battles and public protests. His legal team, led by special counsel Aloy Ejimakor, has long accused the DSS of ignoring a court order issued in May 2023 by Justice Binta Nyako, which mandated legal visits three times a week. These restrictions eventually led the court to summon Ajayi, warning of potential jail time if access continued to be blocked.

The recent breakthrough comes after House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Abia State Representative Obi Aguocha visited Kanu in detention, negotiating what Ejimakor described as a “political compromise” to resolve the ongoing access issue. The visit, authorized directly by the DSS director-general, marked the first successful meeting between Kanu and his lawyers since September 27.
Ejimakor shared the news on social media, highlighting that the meeting included Ndidi Awurum, a Nigerian based in the United States, who accompanied him under DSS authorization.
This latest development provides a hopeful outlook for Kanu’s defense, as he prepares to address the charges against him with full legal representation.
