Canadian music icon Drake experienced a substantial financial loss after betting $300,000 on Canada to win against Argentina in the Copa America semifinal. The match, held at New York’s MetLife Stadium, concluded with a 2-0 victory for Argentina, dashing Drake’s hopes of securing an estimated $2.88 million payout.
The game featured stellar performances from Argentina’s football stars Lionel Messi and Julián Álvarez of Manchester City, both scoring to secure Argentina’s place in the tournament final.
This isn’t the first time Drake has faced a significant betting loss. Earlier this year, he lost a $565,000 bet after wagering on Tyson Fury to defeat Oleksandr Usyk in a boxing match in May.
Drake had shared his optimistic bet slip on Instagram earlier on Tuesday, captioning it with a playful message, “This could get Messi @stake.”
Argentina’s victory sets them up for the final match, where they will face the winner of the semifinal clash between Uruguay and Colombia. This much-anticipated final is scheduled to take place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Sunday, July 14.
Canada, having been defeated, will now compete for third place against the loser of the Uruguay vs. Colombia match.
